Europe needs a CERN for AI
In two guest articles in the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper, Professor Kristian Kersting advocates for the creation of trustworthy AI technology "made in Europe" and a clear plan.
Together with Prof. Holger Hoos (RWTH Aachen), Kersting argues that Europe urgently needs a central institution to coordinate and advance the development of trustworthy, European-made AI technologies.
Modeled after CERN or the ESA, such a center should provide state-of-the-art computing infrastructure, top research talent, and a collaborative environment that drives innovation across science, industry, and the public sector. Kersting warns that AI has become a geopolitical instrument of power, with the U.S. and China investing heavily to secure dominance. To avoid dependency and ensure sovereignty, he urges a bold, unified European strategy for AI.
