Jan Koenderink was a full professor of physics and astronomy at Utrecht University, Netherlands, until his retirement in 2008. Since then, he has held numerous fellow or visiting professor positions at Utrecht University, the Delft University of Technology, and MIT.

Jan Koenderink has been a pioneer in the field of perception research for 50 years. He contributed groundbreaking and visionary research in the fields of optical flow, form perception and material perception with his unique combination of mathematical insights and profound experimental research. He is a fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts and received numerous awards, including the Azriel Rosenfeld Award for lifetime achievement in computer vision in 2013 and together with Andrea Van Doorn the Kurt-Koffka medal from Justus Liebig University Giessen, Germany.
